Utilities Artisan

RCL FOODS is a leading food producer in South Africa, employing over 20,000 people across the region. We manufacture a wide range of popular brands and private label products. We are currently looking for a skilled Utilities Artisan to join our Pies Division team in Krugersdorp, Gauteng.

Role Overview

In this role, you will be responsible for the daily inspection, maintenance, and repair of our utility equipment. Your main goal is to ensure all systems—including ammonia and freon refrigeration, boilers, and air compressors—run safely and efficiently to prevent operational downtime.

Minimum Requirements

  • N3 qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Refrigeration.
  • A completed Trade Test.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with ammonia and freon refrigeration systems.
  • Registration with SAQCC GAS (CAT B Ammonia).
  • Strong knowledge of how to operate and maintain utilities equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily Inspections: Check plantrooms, boilers, air compressors, condensers, and spiral freezers to ensure they are working correctly.
  • Maintenance: Perform scheduled preventative maintenance to keep equipment in top condition.
  • Repairs: Quickly identify and fix mechanical or electrical issues to minimize disruptions.
  • Safety: Follow all safety protocols, including OHS Act and SANS 10147 regulations, especially regarding ammonia handling and pressure vessels.
  • Documentation: Keep accurate records of all inspections, repairs, and maintenance tasks.
  • Training: Help train and supervise apprentices and assistants on the team.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate lifting machinery and other tools required for the job.

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Deep understanding of ammonia refrigeration systems.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work safely in hazardous environments.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Accurate record-keeping and reporting.
