About the Role
The U.S. Mission in South Africa is seeking a professional and dedicated individual for the role of American Citizen Services (ACS) Assistant at the Consulate General in Cape Town. This position serves as a primary point of contact for U.S. citizens, providing essential services ranging from passport processing to emergency assistance.
Key Responsibilities
Citizenship and Passport Services
- Review and process applications for U.S. passports and Consular Reports of Birth Abroad.
- Ensure all documents meet legal requirements and federal regulations.
- Identify potential fraud and maintain accurate electronic and physical records.
Special Consular Services
- Provide urgent assistance to U.S. citizens in distress, including victims of crime and those facing medical or legal emergencies.
- Conduct visits to hospitals and prisons to support U.S. citizens.
- Build and maintain relationships with local authorities, hospitals, and travel agencies to improve support networks.
Communication and Outreach
- Act as the main contact for public inquiries, providing excellent customer service.
- Draft official responses for public and congressional inquiries.
- Update website content and emergency messaging systems to keep the public informed.
Accountability and Security
- Safeguard sensitive personal information and official controlled items (such as passport foils and seals).
- Ensure all work complies with the Privacy Act and strict government security standards.
Requirements
Education:
- Successful completion of at least two years of college or university studies.
Experience:
- Minimum of two years of experience in administrative work, case management, or customer service.
Language Skills:
- Fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
- Fluent in Afrikaans (speaking, reading, and writing).
Technical Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and discretion in sensitive situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with local officials and the public.
Evaluations and Clearances
Candidates must be able to obtain a Public Trust security clearance. The selection process includes a background investigation and may require a medical exam and language proficiency testing.
