About the Department of Basic Education

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is responsible for the schooling system in South Africa, covering Grade R to Grade 12 and adult literacy programs. The department’s mission is to develop, maintain, and support a high-quality education system across the country.

Role Overview

The DBE is looking for a Deputy Director to join the Project Management and Infrastructure team. This role focuses on the planning and execution of school infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will lead teams of professionals to ensure projects are delivered effectively and within legal guidelines.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must have:

  • A recognized three-year qualification (NQF level 6) in a built environment discipline.
  • At least four years of experience as an Assistant Director (or equivalent) in the built environment or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in program and project management.
  • Practical experience in planning and carrying out infrastructure projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of school infrastructure requirements.
  • A solid understanding of relevant legislation, including the Division of Revenue Act (DORA), PFMA, IDIP, and CIDB.
  • The ability to lead and coordinate groups of built environment professionals.
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work independently, manage pressure, and meet strict deadlines.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Added Advantage

  • Specific skills in construction program management will be considered a plus.
