About the Department
The Department of Correctional Services is responsible for the administration and oversight of South Africa’s prison system. The department manages 240 correctional facilities and employs approximately 34,000 staff members to ensure the safety and rehabilitation of over 180,000 inmates.
Position Overview
The Senior Security Officer acts as a Team Leader for external security operations. The primary goal of this role is to maintain the safety and integrity of the correctional facility grounds, preventing unauthorized access and ensuring that all security protocols are strictly followed.
Requirements
- Education: A Matric (Grade 12) certificate or a relevant NQF Level 6 qualification in Behavioural Sciences.
- Training: Successful completion of the Correctional Science Learnership, Basic Training, or Induction Training Course (ITC).
- Experience:
- For candidates with a Matric certificate: At least 10 years of relevant experience at the entry-level production post (CB 1).
- For candidates with an NQF Level 6 qualification: No previous experience is required.
- Skills and Licenses: A valid driver’s license and basic computer literacy are required.
Key Responsibilities
As a Team Leader, your duties will include:
Security and Surveillance
- Leading security teams to monitor correctional center grounds and watch towers.
- Preventing unauthorized persons from entering or leaving the facility.
- Detecting and preventing escape attempts and the smuggling of prohibited items.
- Conducting regular patrols and cell searches to ensure safety.
- Overseeing the security of government property to prevent theft.
Supervision and Escorting
- Coordinating the safe escort of offenders to courts, hospitals, and external doctors.
- Supervising offender work teams to ensure they remain secure while outside the facility.
- Managing visitor protocols, including the supervision of contact and non-contact visits.
- Ensuring that staff are properly utilized during external assignments to maintain high security.
Unit Management and Administration
- Providing leadership for specialized units, such as dog and mounted units.
- Controlling and maintaining security equipment.
- Managing human resources, budgets, and assets within your team.
