Job Title: Professional Engineer: Town Planning
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is looking for a qualified Professional Engineer to join our team in the Eastern Cape. This role involves guiding the coordinated development of the Metro and ensuring sustainable land use management to support our community’s growth.
Role Overview
As a Town Planning professional, you will be responsible for managing the social and physical environment of the Metro. You will provide expert guidance on land use policies, spatial development frameworks, and service delivery objectives to ensure orderly and strategic urban growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Integrated Development Planning (IDP) process to guide city development.
- Analyze land use policies, socio-economic data, and legislative requirements.
- Conduct technical evaluations of land use applications and strategic planning.
- Monitor city-wide land use trends to identify necessary policy interventions.
- Oversee land use management to ensure all developments follow legal and safety standards.
- Prepare detailed investigation reports and respond to planning queries.
- Manage project databases and ensure work is free from errors or defects.
- Provide budgetary control and supervisory support within the department.
Requirements
- A relevant tertiary qualification, preferably an Honours degree in Urban Design or Town Planning.
- Professional registration as a Planner, Architect, or Urban Designer.
- 5 to 8 years of relevant experience in town planning or urban design.
- A valid Code EB driver’s license.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
- Strong communication skills in English and at least one other local official language.

- A solid understanding of relevant planning legislation and Council requirements.
- Experience in budgetary control and team supervision.
