Job Opportunity: Production Technician

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is a world-class facility responsible for managing South Africa’s radio astronomy initiatives. This includes the famous MeerKAT Radio Telescope and various international partnerships. We are looking for a skilled Production Technician to join our team in Cape Town.

Role Overview

As a Production Technician, you will be responsible for assembling and testing electronic modules and systems designed by SARAO. You will ensure that all hardware is built to high standards and functions correctly before being used in the field.

Key Responsibilities

• Build receiver systems and electronic components using technical manufacturing guides.
• Support the maintenance and logistics of systems deployed at our telescope sites.
• Integrate, test, and fix faults in electronic modules and systems.
• Write clear technical reports and test procedures.
• Purchase necessary components and equipment for the production laboratory.

Job Requirements

Education and Licensing:

• National Diploma in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
• A valid driver’s license.

Work Experience:

• At least 5 years of experience in electronic testing.
• Proven experience in testing and fixing RF (Radio Frequency) and digital modules.
• Hands-on experience with PCB (Printed Circuit Board) manufacturing, assembly, and repair.
• Experience using test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and oscilloscopes.
• Knowledge of quality standards (ISO 9001) and IPC manufacturing standards.

Technical Knowledge:

• Strong understanding of circuit testing and RF components.
• Ability to read and interpret circuit diagrams and technical datasheets.
• Strong technical writing skills.
• Experience with Linux, Python scripting, or fiber optics is a plus.
