Role Overview

We are seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Executive Manager for the Crop Sciences, Natural Resources, and Engineering (NRE) division. The successful candidate will oversee the development and implementation of research strategies that align with national priorities and provide impactful solutions for the agricultural industry.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Innovation

  • Develop and lead the division’s Research and Development (R&D) strategy.
  • Translate business goals into practical products and services that benefit the agricultural sector.
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary research across various ARC institutes.
  • Oversee research programs in crops, vegetables, medicinal plants, and engineering to improve productivity and sustainability.
  • Promote scientific excellence through peer-reviewed publications and intellectual property management.

Stakeholder Engagement and Business Development

  • Build strong partnerships with government departments, industry leaders, and farming communities.
  • Identify and secure new funding sources and commercial opportunities to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Market innovative products to new and existing clients.
  • Provide expert advice to ARC executive management on cluster activities and sector trends.

Operational Excellence and Risk Management

  • Lead and motivate high-performing teams and manage staff performance.
  • Oversee the management of research facilities and infrastructure.
  • Ensure financial compliance with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and ARC policies.
  • Identify and manage operational, financial, and research risks across the division.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Crop Sciences, Natural Resources Management, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related biological science field.
  • At least 8 years of post-PhD experience in a scientific research environment, with at least 5 years at a Senior Management level.
  • Proven track record in leading large-scale institutional research programs.
  • Strong history of peer-reviewed publications and securing research funding.
  • In-depth understanding of the agricultural sector and its regulatory environment.
  • Registration with a professional or scientific body is an advantage.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to manage and inspire diverse teams.
