Deputy Director: Spatial and Urban Development Planning

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is looking for a dedicated professional to join the team as a Deputy Director for Spatial and Urban Development Planning. This role is essential in supporting the department’s mandate to oversee local government and traditional affairs through effective spatial planning and urban development.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need the following qualifications and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Urban/Town and Regional Planning, Development Planning, or a related qualification (NQF level 6 or 7).
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a related field.
  • A valid driver’s license and a willingness to travel frequently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook).
  • Registration with SACPLAN as a Technical or Professional Town Planner is a strong advantage.

  • In-depth knowledge of Urban Development, Integrated Development Planning (IDP), and Smart City design.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Managing municipal spatial planning tools to help guide strategic development.
  • Overseeing the implementation of the Small-Town Regeneration Strategy.
  • Leading the Smart Cities Framework (SCF) by developing and managing smart city initiatives in various municipalities.
  • Improving town planning and GIS (Geographic Information System) capabilities within municipalities to enhance overall planning skills.
  • Handling and facilitating queries regarding land use management within the department.
