Horticulture Learnership

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is a non-profit company owned by the City of Johannesburg. We are responsible for maintaining the city’s parks, cemeteries, wetlands, and green spaces. We are currently looking for motivated individuals to join our Horticulture Learnership program in Gauteng.

Job Overview

What You Will Do

As a learner, you will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of horticulture, including:

Plant Care and Maintenance

  • Preparing and conditioning soil for planting.
  • Planting trees, shrubs, and flowers in open ground.
  • Pruning and shaping plants and trees.
  • Applying fertilizers and managing watering systems.

Plant Propagation

  • Growing plants from seeds and stem cuttings.
  • Learning how to use different growth media for containers.
  • Caring for young seedlings in a nursery environment.

Pest and Weed Control

  • Removing weeds and invasive plants manually or with chemicals.
  • Practicing safe pest control and applying herbicides or pesticides.

Safety and Technical Skills

  • Following health and safety rules in a horticultural workplace.
  • Learning environmental protection practices.
  • Operating machinery and equipment, such as mowers, safely.

Requirements

  • A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or NQF Level 4 qualification.
  • Physical fitness and the health required to perform manual labor outdoors.
  • Basic literacy with the ability to read, write, and communicate clearly.
