Laboratory Assistant (Permanent Position)

Lancet Laboratories SA is a leading provider of pathology services across South Africa and the wider African continent. We are currently seeking a dedicated and professional Laboratory Assistant to join our team in Cape Town, Western Cape.

Job Summary

In this role, you will be responsible for preparing laboratory specimens and performing related procedures. Your work will ensure that all pre-testing and post-testing activities follow standard operating procedures to maintain high diagnostic standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.
  • Current registration with the HPCSA in the relevant discipline.
  • A relevant professional certificate.
  • 0 to 1 year of experience in a laboratory environment.

Required Knowledge

  • Understanding of medical ethical guidelines in pathology.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems.
  • Knowledge of laboratory standards and operating processes.
  • Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, sort, and organize specimens for testing.
  • Verify and enter patient information into the Meditech system, ensuring it matches the request forms.
  • Prepare specimens and media for analysis according to specific test requirements.
  • Assist with lab support tasks such as cleaning glassware and preparing stains.
  • Label and store samples correctly to ensure they can be easily tracked.
  • Monitor stock levels of laboratory supplies to ensure items are always available.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges and stopwatches.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace by following safety protocols and waste disposal rules.
  • Report any equipment failures or incidents to management.
  • Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) to keep skills and registrations up to date.
