Job Opportunity: Hop Assistant

The South African Breweries (SAB), a subsidiary of AB InBev, is South Africa’s leading brewer and distributor. With a history spanning over 120 years, SAB is a vital part of the country’s economy and social fabric. We are currently looking for a motivated Hop Assistant to join our team in Gauteng.

Role Overview

The Hop Assistant supports the Farm Manager in the daily operations of hop farming. This role involves overseeing the growing process, managing seasonal workers, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental laws and company procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace using 5S principles.
  • Identify and report unsafe practices and conduct regular safety inspections.
  • Ensure all staff wear proper protective clothing (PPE) and follow safety protocols.

Farm Operations and Maintenance

  • Plan and prepare for daily farming tasks.
  • Perform routine repairs and maintenance on farm equipment and tools.
  • Maintain the hop structures and ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Carry out all activities related to growing and harvesting hops.
  • Use problem-solving techniques to resolve operational issues.

Team Supervision

  • Assist the Farm Manager with hiring and training seasonal workers.
  • Supervise seasonal staff during hop stringing, cutting, and weed control.
  • Manage land crews during the harvest season.
  • Keep accurate daily attendance records for the workforce.

Logistics and Driving

  • Drive company trucks and tractors to transport manure, fertilizer, and equipment.
  • Transport farm workers safely to different locations.
  • Move hops from the fields during the harvest period.
  • Perform basic maintenance checks on all vehicles.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) is preferred.
  • Experience: 1 to 2 years of experience in farming and operating farm machinery.
  • Licenses: A valid license to drive a tractor.
  • Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities and the ability to lead and manage people.
  • Attributes: Mentally alert, organized, and detail-oriented.
