The Role
We are looking for a Junior Technical Assistant to provide essential support for our research projects and laboratory operations. This role involves a mix of outdoor fieldwork and indoor laboratory tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist researchers and students with various field and laboratory tasks.
- Collect soil and plant samples using specialized tools like augers and corers.
- Gather and record field data independently, including weekly soil moisture readings.
- Drive team members to various field locations.
- Prepare soil and plant samples for laboratory analysis.
- Perform basic soil chemical and physical tests.
- Help set up equipment and materials for undergraduate practical sessions.
- Keep laboratories, storage facilities, and preparation areas clean and organized.
- Perform routine maintenance on basic laboratory equipment.
- Transport research equipment and samples safely.
Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) Certificate with Mathematics and Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry).
- A valid South African Driver’s license with at least three years of driving experience.
- Physical fitness to handle outdoor fieldwork and sample collection.
- Willingness to travel to remote locations and work in all weather conditions.
- Basic computer skills, specifically in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Flexibility to work varied hours when required by field projects.
- Strong communication skills suitable for a multilingual environment.
Recommended Experience
- Previous experience in field research or a laboratory setting.
- Experience working within a university or tertiary education environment.
- Strong organizational skills and a reliable work ethic.
