We are currently seeking a skilled Technical Assistant to support our research and teaching workshops.

Job Overview

The Technical Assistant will oversee the daily operations of the mechanical workshop. This role involves designing, building, and repairing equipment used in research and teaching labs. You will work closely with academic staff, researchers, and students to provide technical solutions and maintain a safe, efficient working environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the mechanical workshop and support teaching and research needs.
  • Operate workshop machinery (lathes, mills, welding equipment) to complete internal and contract jobs.
  • Design, build, install, and repair mechanical components for experimental projects.
  • Advise researchers and students on project feasibility, materials, costs, and timelines.
  • Perform regular maintenance and calibration on workshop tools and machinery.
  • Ensure all activities comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Manage workshop inventory, procurement, and budget planning.
  • Create technical drawings using CAD/CAM software and other digital tools.
  • Train and mentor interns and students on workshop skills and equipment use.

Requirements

  • Industry certification (NQF level 7 or higher) or significant professional workshop experience.
  • Proven expertise in mechanical engineering, machining, and fabrication.
  • Hands-on experience with conventional and advanced workshop machinery.
  • Strong skills in CAD/CAM systems and preparing technical drawings.
  • Experience working with various materials, including stainless steel, aluminum, plastics, and wood.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with faculty, students, and suppliers.
  • Knowledge of health and safety best practices in a workshop setting.
  • Ability to mentor others and a commitment to staying updated on new technology.
