Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Matric certificate plus an NQF Level 6 qualification in Social Science, Development Studies, Public Administration, Humanities, Natural Science, or a related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in government, the private sector, or community organizations where public engagement is a core focus.
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, and partnership-building skills.

Key Responsibilities

As the Assistant Director of Public Participation, your duties will include:

  • Coordination: Managing public participation activities across various government programs and projects.
  • Support: Helping municipalities and other government branches follow the correct public participation processes and regulations.
  • Reporting & Quality Control: Overseeing the creation of project reports and ensuring all work meets high-quality standards.
  • Training: Identifying areas where municipal staff need more support and leading training or knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Advisory: Providing expert advice on public participation laws and best practices, including the Municipal Systems Act and NEMA regulations.
  • Documentation: Preparing and reviewing engagement plans, community response reports, and official submissions.
  • Networking: Building relationships with professionals and organizations involved in community development and social impact assessments.

Professional Standards

We value candidates who apply recognized principles (such as IAP2 and ABCD) to make public participation more meaningful. Membership in related professional networks is considered an advantage.
