Programme Coordinator: Robotics
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is a facility of the National Research Foundation. We manage major radio astronomy initiatives in South Africa, including the MeerKAT Radio Telescope in the Karoo and the HartRAO facility. We are looking for a dedicated Programme Coordinator to lead our robotics initiatives in the communities surrounding our telescope sites.
Role Summary
The Programme Coordinator for Robotics will oversee and coordinate SARAO’s various robotics programs. This role involves working closely with schools and local communities to inspire interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through hands-on robotics education and competitions.
Key Responsibilities
- Activity Planning: Plan and execute robotics programs and classroom projects.
- Competition Management: Manage logistics for regional, national, and international robotics competitions, such as the FIRST LEGO League and World Robot Olympiad.
- Mentorship: Guide coaches on recruitment and provide mentoring to learners participating in the program.
- Technical Support: Assist students and coaches in designing, building, and programming robots.
- Resource Management: Maintain an accurate inventory of robotics equipment, tools, and laptops, ensuring all gear is in good working order.
- Outreach: Promote robotics achievements through various media and build partnerships with universities and STEM organizations.
- Educational Support: Facilitate learner participation in science expos, math and science olympiads, and the Astro Quiz.
Requirements
- Education: A National Diploma in Computer Science or Information Technology.
- Experience: At least 2 years of general working experience, with at least 1 year specifically focused on robotics within an educational setting.
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of ICT systems, computer programming, and robotics hardware.
- Soft Skills: Excellent administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Project Management: Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and navigate complex schedules.
