Medical Specialist: Internal Medicine (Grade 1 to 3)

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is responsible for providing public healthcare services to the people of the Western Cape. We are looking for qualified and dedicated Medical Specialists to join our Internal Medicine team.

Educational and Professional Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A formal qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine.
  • Current and valid registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine.
  • A valid driver’s license (Code B/EB) and the ability to travel for work.
  • A willingness to participate in remunerated overtime.

Experience Requirements by Grade

This position is available across three grades based on your years of professional experience:

  • Grade 1: No experience required after registering with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine.
  • Grade 2: At least 5 years of experience as a Medical Specialist after HPCSA registration.
  • Grade 3: At least 10 years of experience as a Medical Specialist after HPCSA registration.

  • The ability to work as a specialist physician in a large regional hospital and teaching environment.
  • Confidence in making independent clinical decisions and managing a wide variety of medical cases.
  • Proven leadership skills, including experience in supervising staff and managing resources.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • A commitment to ongoing education and training.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare legislation, hospital policies, and procedures.
