Trainee Shed Assistant – Lydenburg
Transnet is a vital part of South Africa’s freight logistics network, responsible for moving goods across the country and maintaining world-class transport infrastructure. We are looking for dedicated individuals to join our team in Lydenburg as Trainee Shed Assistants.
Job Purpose
The primary role of a Trainee Shed Assistant is to assist the Shedman with moving locomotives (shunting) within a specific area. This role is essential for ensuring that locomotives are utilized safely and effectively to meet transport schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Locomotive Movement: Help move locomotives within the yard according to safety rules and instructions.
- Preparation and Delivery: Assist in preparing locomotives and delivering them to maintenance staff or train crews.
- Safety and Compliance: Follow all safety standards and legislation to ensure a safe working environment. Identify and report any hazards on tracks or equipment.
- Coupling and Uncoupling: Safely connect and disconnect locomotives, including buffers, air pipes, and electrical cables.
- Maintenance Support: Check fuel and sand levels, refuel locomotives, and test auxiliary equipment.
- Yard Operations: Operate track points correctly to guide locomotive direction and prevent derailments.
- Securing Locomotives: Use handbrakes and wheel blocks (scotches) to ensure parked locomotives do not move.
- Housekeeping: Keep the work area, tools, and locomotives clean and tidy.
- Communication: Use hand signals to guide the Shedman during locomotive positioning.
Requirements
- Education: Grade 10 certificate or a minimum of 6 years of experience in an operations environment.
- Training: Must be willing to undergo and pass both theoretical and practical Shed Assistant training.
- Health and Fitness: Must be physically and mentally fit. This includes passing medical exams for hearing and vision, as well as regular safety behavior assessments.
- Reliability: Prepared to undergo medical surveillance every 12 months to ensure continued fitness for duty.
