Role Purpose

The Trainee Train Assistant supports the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of various train types, including freight, heavy haul, and passenger trains. The goal is to ensure that cargo reaches its destination safely, on time, and in good condition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Locomotive Preparation: Assist with preparing locomotives before a trip, including checking equipment, cleaning the work area, and performing brake tests.
  • Communication: Set up and test communication tools such as radios, handsets, and telemeters.
  • Safety Inspections: Perform pre-trip inspections to ensure the train meets safety standards. This includes attaching or detaching vehicles and mounting train indicators.
  • Shunting Operations: Execute shunting activities in sidings, including moving and clearing empty or loaded trucks according to work orders.
  • En-Route Support: Assist the driver during the journey by observing signals, patrolling locomotives, and protecting the train during any incidents or emergencies.
  • Administration: Complete the Train Journal and other administrative paperwork accurately to ensure proper salary processing and record-keeping.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Education: Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
  • Age: Must be at least 21 years old (as per safety regulations for train control duties).
  • Physical Fitness: Must be at least 1.6m tall and capable of carrying heavy objects.
  • Health: Must be physically and mentally fit, with excellent hearing and vision. Candidates will undergo medical and safety assessments every 12 months.
  • Aptitude: Good psychomotor skills (assessed via the Vienna Testing System).
  • Training: Must be willing and able to complete both theoretical and practical Train Assistant training to become certified.
