About the Role
Transnet is the backbone of South Africa’s freight logistics chain. We are looking for Trainee Train Assistants to support our rail operations. In this role, you will assist the Train Driver in operating various types of locomotives safely and efficiently. Your goal is to ensure that our customers’ goods reach their destinations on time and in perfect condition.
Key Responsibilities
As a Trainee Train Assistant, your duties will include:
- Locomotive Preparation: Helping prepare locomotives for transit, checking equipment, and performing brake tests.
- Safety Checks: Ensuring the train is roadworthy and meets all safety standards before departure.
- Communication: Managing radio and handset equipment to maintain contact during the journey.
- Shunting Activities: Assisting with the movement, coupling, and uncoupling of train wagons at various sidings.
- Enroute Support: Watching signals, patrolling locomotives during the trip, and helping the driver during emergencies or technical issues.
- Administration: Completing train journals and providing accurate feedback on any incidents during the shift.
Requirements
To be considered for this position, you must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Grade 12 (Matric) with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
- Age: Must be at least 21 years old to perform train control duties.
- Physical Fitness: Must be at least 1.6m tall and physically capable of carrying heavy objects.
- Health: Must be mentally and physically fit, with good hearing and vision. Candidates will undergo medical and safety assessments.
- Aptitude: Good psychomotor skills (tested via the Vienna Testing System).
Training and Development
Successful candidates must be willing to undergo both theoretical and practical training. You will be required to obtain a Train Assistant certificate to work independently. Ongoing medical and safety assessments will be conducted every 12 months to ensure continued compliance with industry standards.
