About the Position
The City of Tshwane is looking for a qualified Building Surveyor to join the Building Inspections team. This role is essential for ensuring that all construction within the municipality meets safety standards and legal regulations. The successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting building sites, reviewing plans, and enforcing building codes to maintain high-quality urban development.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: A three-year diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Building Management, Building Science, Building Surveying, or Quantity Surveying.
- Experience: At least two years of relevant experience in building control within a local government environment.
- Driver’s License: A valid Code B driving license and access to your own vehicle.
- Skills: Proficiency in basic computer applications.
- Clearance: Must be willing to undergo a criminal record check, including fingerprinting by the Tshwane Metro Police Department.
Key Responsibilities
The Building Surveyor will perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks, including:
- Site Inspections: Conducting inspections of foundations, sewerage systems, and final building work to ensure compliance with the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act.
- Plan Review: Studying building plans to confirm they meet SABS 0400 standards and match the actual site conditions.
- Certification: Approving and issuing occupation certificates for completed buildings or specific building sections.
- Law Enforcement: Identifying unauthorized building work, issuing contravention notices, and preparing reports for court cases when regulations are ignored.
- Public Relations: Investigating complaints from the public, city departments, or council members regarding building projects and land use.
- Training: Providing guidance and training to new building surveyors, health inspectors, and technical students.
- Reporting: Maintaining accurate daily files and compiling statistical reports on inspection activities.
