About the Role
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is looking for a skilled Digital Forensics Investigator to join our team. The primary focus of this role is to investigate fraud related to compromised taxpayer accounts. Because this work is digital in nature, you will work with large datasets and use advanced data analysis skills to identify, preserve, and report on evidence that can stand up in a court of law.
Key Responsibilities
As a Digital Forensics Investigator, your duties will include:
- Investigation: Assessing fraud allegations and determining what data needs to be extracted from internal systems to begin an investigation.
- Data Analysis: Processing and analyzing digital files according to internal procedures to ensure all evidence is “court-ready.”
- Collaboration: Working with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather information and research new digital fraud trends.
- Reporting: Compiling detailed findings, identifying risks, and providing expert testimony in criminal or formal proceedings when required.
- Process Improvement: Identifying ways to improve operational efficiency and suggesting changes to policies or procedures based on emerging trends.
- Compliance: Ensuring all work follows legal standards, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ethical guidelines.
Requirements
We are looking for candidates who meet one of the following criteria:
- Option 1: A National Diploma or Advanced Certificate (NQF 6) in Data Analysis, Forensics, or Investigations, plus 5–7 years of experience in a fraud or tax investigation environment (including 2–3 years as a specialist).
- Option 2: A Senior Certificate (Matric/NQF 4) plus 10 years of related experience in data analysis, fraud, tax, or investigations.
Technical & Behavioral Skills
To be successful in this role, you should possess:
- Expertise in data analysis and the preservation of digital evidence (chain of custody).
- Strong investigative skills, including interviewing and interrogation techniques.
- The ability to think analytically and pay close attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle complex data.
- High standards of honesty, integrity, and professional ethics.
- The ability to communicate clearly and provide authoritative advice to stakeholders.
