The Role
We are seeking a qualified Manager for Legal Services to oversee our legal department. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing legal risks, providing expert advice, and ensuring the municipality operates within the required legal frameworks.
Minimum Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB is highly preferred).
- 5 to 8 years of relevant legal experience.
- At least 2 years of experience within a local government environment is an advantage.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Compliance with Municipal Minimum Competency (MMC) standards is an advantage.
- Excellent communication skills in English and at least one other official language of the Western Cape.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategy and Planning: Define and implement short-term objectives for the Legal Services department.
- Legal Advice: Manage the flow of legal communication and provide professional advice to the organization and the public.
- Litigation Management: Oversee legal proceedings to protect the municipality’s interests and reputation.
- Property Administration: Handle all legal aspects of property management, including acquisitions, disposals, leases, donations, and ownership transfers.
- Financial Management: Prepare departmental budgets and ensure responsible expenditure control.
- Team Leadership: Manage and supervise staff within the legal division according to municipal policies and labor laws.
