Chief Executive: Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA)

The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is responsible for managing and developing South Africa’s eight commercial ports. The Role
We are seeking a visionary Chief Executive (CE) to lead the TNPA through a significant period of transformation. As the CE, you will oversee the management of our national port system and lead the transition of TNPA into an autonomous, corporatized entity. Reporting to the Board and the Group COO, you will be responsible for driving operational excellence, fostering private sector partnerships, and ensuring our ports remain globally competitive.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute integrated plans for the port system, focusing on sustainability, technology, and infrastructure investment.
- Financial Management: Direct financial performance to ensure long-term viability and compliance with all regulatory standards.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee all port facilities and services, including cargo, cruise operations, and real estate, while maintaining high standards for safety and quality.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with government bodies, regulators, private sector partners, and port communities.
- Governance and Ethics: Act as the guardian of corporate governance, ensuring all operations follow environmental, maritime, and labor laws.
- Innovation and Technology: Lead the digital transformation of our ports, implementing smart technologies, automation, and cybersecurity measures.
- Sustainability: Promote eco-friendly practices and invest in infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate change.
- Team Mentorship: Motivate and develop a high-performing senior leadership team, fostering a culture of accountability and inclusivity.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate must possess the following:
- Education: A Bachelor’s Degree or Postgraduate Diploma (NQF 7 or 8) in Business, Economics, Maritime Studies, Engineering, Finance, or Logistics. An executive leadership qualification is a distinct advantage.
- Experience: At least 15 years of experience in a large, complex operational environment. This must include 10 years in a leadership role and at least 5 years at the executive level.
- Expertise: Proven experience in managing large capital investments, public-private partnerships, or corporate restructuring.
- Requirements: A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel locally and internationally as required.
