Assistant Director 2: Eco-DRR Data Management Specialist
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is an organization dedicated to the research and sharing of biodiversity information. We are legally mandated to support the management of South Africa’s rich biodiversity resources. We are currently seeking a professional and experienced Data Management Specialist to join our team in Cape Town.
Job Overview

Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will lead the management and curation of biodiversity and spatial datasets. Your primary duties will include:
- Overseeing the collection, validation, and quality control of important biodiversity data.
- Ensuring all data meets professional metadata standards, such as Darwin Core and SANBI guidelines.
- Maintaining the reliability of data infrastructure, including version control, backups, and access security.
- Providing technical support to data contributors, citizen scientists, and internal staff to ensure system stability.
- Coordinating the full data lifecycle, from initial processing to final publication.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: A Degree (NQF 7) in Biodiversity Informatics, Environmental Science, Information Science, or a related field. A post-graduate qualification (NQF 8) is a strong advantage.
- Work Experience: At least 6 years of experience in biodiversity data management, informatics, or environmental data systems.
- Leadership: A minimum of 3 years in a supervisory or management position.
