Medical Officer: Emergency Medicine (Grade 1 to 3)

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is seeking dedicated medical professionals to join our team. We have two vacancies for Medical Officers specializing in Emergency Medicine to provide high-quality public healthcare services across the Western Cape province.

Role Overview

Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: An appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
  • Registration: Current and valid registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
  • Driver’s License: A valid (Code B/EB) driver’s license.
  • Certifications: Valid certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).

Experience Levels by Grade

Applicants will be appointed to a specific grade based on their years of relevant experience:

Grade 1

  • SA-Qualified: No experience required after registration with the HPCSA.
  • Foreign-Qualified: At least 1 year of relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health professional council.

Grade 2

  • SA-Qualified: At least 5 years of experience as a Medical Practitioner after registration with the HPCSA.
  • Foreign-Qualified: At least 6 years of relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health professional council.

Grade 3

  • SA-Qualified: At least 10 years of experience as a Medical Practitioner after registration with the HPCSA.
  • Foreign-Qualified: At least 11 years of relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health professional council.

Key Competencies and Skills

  • Completion of Community Service is essential.
  • Proven experience in evidence-based emergency management of acutely unwell patients.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to perform under pressure in a high-volume, high-stress environment.
  • Proficiency in basic computer systems and IT administrative tasks.
  • Willingness to participate in commuted overtime (compulsory).
  • Interest in participating in medical audits, research, and quality improvement projects.
