Medical Officer (Grades 1 to 3)

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is the provincial government body dedicated to providing high-quality public healthcare to the citizens of the Western Cape, South Africa. Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must have a medical qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner. You must also provide proof of current registration with the HPCSA.

Experience Levels by Grade:

  • Grade 1: No previous experience is required for South African qualified practitioners. Foreign-qualified practitioners require 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years of experience for South African qualified practitioners. Foreign-qualified practitioners require 6 years of experience.
  • Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years of experience for South African qualified practitioners. Foreign-qualified practitioners require 11 years of experience.

Additional Job Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license (Code B/EB).
  • A willingness to travel throughout the districts and participate in outreach programs in the Oudtshoorn and Kannaland areas.
  • Applicants must be willing to sign a commuted overtime contract and work after-hours when necessary.

Core Competencies and Skills

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • The ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Mandatory computer literacy, specifically in Microsoft Office.
  • Clinical skills suitable for a rural environment, including surgical and anaesthetic procedures such as Caesarean sections, sterilisations, and regional blocks.
