Medical Specialist Grade 1 to 3 (Psychiatry)

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is seeking a dedicated Medical Specialist in Psychiatry. This role is essential to providing quality public healthcare services to the Western Cape community. Role Overview

The successful candidate will provide advanced psychiatric care, focusing on general adult psychiatry, emergency services, and specialized areas such as eating disorders and bariatric psychiatry. The role involves clinical work, teaching, research, and leadership within a multidisciplinary team.

Job Requirements

  • Qualification: An appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
  • Registration: Current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
  • Driving: A valid driver’s license and a willingness to travel as required.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to participate in after-hours duty rosters.

Experience Levels

Candidates will be appointed to a specific grade based on their years of experience after registering as a specialist:

  • Grade 1: No experience required after registration with the HPCSA.
  • Grade 2: At least 5 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist.
  • Grade 3: At least 10 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist.

Key Competencies and Skills

  • Advanced clinical knowledge in general adult psychiatry and emergency psychiatric care.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing eating disorders and bariatric (obesity) psychiatry.
  • Ability to administer electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
  • Strong skills in clinical governance, service planning, and evidence-based research.
  • Experience in teaching and supervising health professionals at various levels.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead and work effectively in teams.
  • Commitment to the values of care, accountability, integrity, and responsiveness.
