Deputy Director: Council & Committees

The City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, located in Gauteng, is a leading economic hub in Africa. We are looking for a dedicated professional to join our team as a Deputy Director for Council and Committees. This is a full-time position focused on supporting the legislative functions of the city.

Role Overview

In this leadership position, you will manage the Council and Committees Sub-Directorate. Your primary goal is to provide high-quality support to the Legislative Arm of the City of Johannesburg. You will ensure that all operations align with national and provincial legislation, follow best practices, and uphold the principles of good governance.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4).
  • A Degree in Public Administration, Political Science, or Business Administration (NQF Level 7).
  • 7 to 8 years of experience within the Legislative Sector, Local Government, or Provincial/National Government.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a management role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Speaker: Provide administrative and strategic support to the Speaker to ensure the Council and its Section 79 Committees function effectively.
  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong professional relationships with relevant institutions and networks.
  • Financial Oversight: Manage financial controls, follow proper procedures, and provide data to assist with financial planning.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop short-term and long-term objectives for the sub-directorate to ensure efficient secretariat and administrative support.
  • Team Management: Oversee staff performance and productivity within the Council and Committees unit.
  • Operational Management: Direct daily operations to ensure all legislative support, record-keeping, and language services are delivered effectively.
