Assistant Manager Nursing: General (Night Duty)

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is responsible for providing public healthcare services to the Western Cape province. We are currently seeking a dedicated professional for the position of Assistant Manager Nursing (General) to oversee night duty operations.

Requirements and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must meet the following educational and professional criteria:

  • A Basic R425 qualification (Degree or Diploma in Nursing) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse with Psychiatry.
  • A valid (Code B/EB) driver’s license.

Professional Experience

  • A minimum of 8 years of recognizable experience in nursing after registering with the SANC as a Professional Nurse.
  • At least 3 years of this experience must be at a management level.

Key Competencies and Skills

We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in nursing leadership and hospital management, including:

  • Legal Knowledge: A deep understanding of nursing legislation, ethical practices, and how they apply to a rural regional hospital.
  • Safety and Quality: Knowledge of Infection Prevention Control (IPC), Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), and Quality Assurance frameworks.
  • Leadership: Strong skills in conflict resolution, problem-solving, decision-making, and team accountability.
  • Management: Experience in Human Resource Management (People Management) and a good understanding of financial policies.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills and proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Inherent Requirements of the Job

  • Willingness to work night shifts, weekends, public holidays, and standby shifts.
  • Availability to travel for official meetings or training sessions.
  • Ability to act as the Deputy Nursing Manager or Head of Nursing when required.

Main Responsibilities

  • Ensure the nursing team provides high-quality care according to professional standards and scope of practice.
  • Oversee clinical nursing practices during night duty.
  • Promote a safe environment through effective risk management and compliance.
  • Lead and mentor staff while maintaining professional ethics.
