Senior Assistant Officer: Technical Research Officer
The University of the Free State (UFS) is looking for a dedicated Senior Assistant Officer to serve as a Technical Research Officer. This is a contract position based in the Free State, focusing on the cultivation of medicinal plants and rural community development.
Role Overview
In this role, you will coordinate the growth, harvesting, and processing of medicinal plants. You will play a key part in supporting rural communities by providing training and technical guidance. This position requires regular travel to project sites across South Africa and neighboring countries.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the cultivation, harvesting, and storage of medicinal plants according to quality standards.
- Train and mentor community members involved in commercial plant cultivation and wild harvesting.
- Provide technical advice to help community partners improve the quality and sustainability of their crops.
- Participate in laboratory quality control and accreditation processes (ISO, GLP, and GACP).
- Maintain accurate records and documentation for audit purposes.
- Support research and development for herbal medicines and botanical health products.
- Monitor project timelines and ensure all research protocols are followed.
- Work closely with researchers, students, and project partners.
Job Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree, Advanced Diploma (NQF Level 7), or a three-year National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Agriculture or a related field.
- At least one year of experience in plant production, rural development, or medicinal plant research.
- Demonstrated experience in community engagement and training, particularly in rural settings.
- Knowledge of plant propagation, including nursery and greenhouse maintenance.
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel frequently to remote locations.

- Experience with project management tools.
- An understanding of indigenous knowledge systems and how they relate to scientific research.
- Experience in commercial agriculture or university research environments.
- Ability to speak multiple South African languages.
- Strong communication skills and a proactive work ethic.
