Introduction
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is committed to providing a safe, integrated, and accessible road transportation system. We are looking for a dedicated Senior Safety Officer to ensure the highest standards of health and safety are maintained across our provincial operations and road network projects.
Minimum Requirements
- An undergraduate qualification in Safety Management (NQF Level 6).
- A minimum of 3–5 years of experience in an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) environment.
- Current registration with a relevant Professional Body.
- A valid driver’s license (minimum Code B).
Key Knowledge and Skills
The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong understanding of safety regulations and administrative procedures, including:
- Legal Expertise: Deep knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Labor Relations Act, Public Service Act, and the South African Constitution.
- Safety Standards: Familiarity with SABS specifications, construction regulations, and the National Building Regulations Act.
- Specialized Knowledge: Understanding of fire protection, hazardous substances, disaster management, and the Compensation for Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA).
- Financial Awareness: Knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and Treasury Regulations.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in computer literacy, report writing, firefighting, and first aid.

Main Responsibilities
- Monitor and implement safety protocols in accordance with the OHS Act.
- Conduct research and analysis to improve safety policies and procedures.
- Oversee technical and mechanical safety inspections.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and fire protection standards.
- Work collaboratively with management and staff to maintain a safe work environment.
