The ARC-Tropical & Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) division is looking for a highly skilled and experienced Chief Research Technician to join our team in Addo, Eastern Cape.

Job Description

In this role, you will be responsible for managing breeding projects and evaluating tropical and subtropical crops. Your main duties will include:

  • Overseeing daily field operations and research blocks with the help of support staff.
  • Managing project budgets to ensure funds and labor are used effectively.
  • Preparing progress reports and professional presentations.
  • Identifying new research opportunities and applying advanced breeding technologies.
  • Supervising and mentoring Research Technicians and Support Assistants.
  • Collaborating with growers, industry officers, and government departments.
  • Writing scientific and popular articles and sharing research results with the community and the industry.

Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: An MSc or MTech in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Horticulture, or a related field with at least 8 years of experience. Alternatively, a BSc Honours with 10 years of applicable experience.
  • Field Experience: Proven ability to manage farm or research blocks in a field environment.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of plant breeding and horticultural production.
  • Management Skills: Basic experience in financial and project management.
  • Communication: A history of collaborating at a national level.
  • Technology: Advanced computer literacy.
  • License: A valid Code EB driver’s license and the ability to drive.
  • Advantage: Registration with a professional scientific body is a plus.
