Job Opportunity: General Workers (2 Positions)

South African National Parks (SANParks) is a world leader in conservation and scientific research. We manage a system of parks that protect South Africa’s indigenous plants, animals, and cultural heritage. We are currently looking for two dedicated General Workers to join our team in the Free State.

Requirements

  • A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
  • Good English skills (speaking, reading, and writing).
  • High level of physical fitness (candidates will undergo a fitness test).
  • Practical experience using a chainsaw and brushcutter (please provide competency certificates).
  • Experience in horse riding, working in a stable, and saddling horses.

Additional Advantages

  • Previous experience in nature conservation, such as clearing invasive plants or wildfire suppression.
  • A Basic Firefighting Certificate.
  • A Basic First Aid Certificate.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
  • Understanding of the laws and policies related to park management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Horse Care: Monitor horse health, assist with vaccinations, feeding, and grooming.
  • Stable Maintenance: Clean and maintain stables, paddocks, gardens, and surrounding office areas.
  • Equipment Care: Ensure all riding equipment, including saddles and bridles, is cleaned and kept in good condition.
  • Visitor Support: Assist staff with guided horse outrides for visitors.
  • Field Work: Help build and maintain fences, manage soil erosion, and control invasive plant species.
  • Fire Management: Assist with fire breaks, wildfire suppression, and controlled burns.
  • Infrastructure: Maintain buildings, hiking trails, and park signage.
  • Safety: Follow all health and safety (OHS) procedures at all times.
