About the Role

Govan Mbeki Municipality is looking for a dedicated professional to join our team as a Building Control Officer. Our mission is to serve the community through sustainable services, economic development, and transparent governance. This role is essential in ensuring that all local building projects are safe, compliant, and meet national standards.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.
  • A National Diploma in Building Science.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience, preferably within a local government environment.
  • A valid Code EB (08) driver’s license.
  • Strong knowledge of building and construction principles, materials, and methods.
  • The ability to read and interpret technical building plans.
  • Familiarity with Town Planning Ordinances, financial regulations, and budgeting procedures.
  • Competency levels that align with the Municipal Staff Regulations (Government Gazette 45181).

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Managing the daily operations of the Building Control Section.
  • Reviewing and approving building plans to ensure they follow National Building Regulations.
  • Overseeing building and rezoning regulations to ensure local compliance.
  • Verifying that design details and construction specifications meet all necessary regulations before work begins.
  • Monitoring new building projects, additions, and renovations to ensure they meet standard specifications.
  • Handling administrative tasks, including maintaining accurate records for all work in progress and completed projects.
  • Assisting emerging contractors by explaining technical procedures and building standards.
