Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following criteria:
- A three-year diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Building Management, Building Surveying, or Quantity Surveying.
- At least two years of experience in building control within a local government environment.
- A valid Code B driver’s license and access to your own vehicle.
- Proficiency in basic computer use.
- Willingness to undergo a criminal record check, including fingerprinting.
Key Responsibilities
As a Building Surveyor, your main duties will include:
- Inspections: Checking building work to ensure it meets safety and quality standards according to the National Building Regulations. This includes foundation, sewerage, and final inspections.
- Plan Review: Studying building plans to ensure they comply with SABS 0400 and other relevant codes.
- Compliance: Approving the occupation of new buildings and ensuring all structures match their approved plans.
- Law Enforcement: Identifying illegal building work, issuing notices, and preparing reports for court cases when regulations are ignored.
- Public Relations: Investigating complaints from the public or city officials regarding building projects or land use.
- Training: Mentoring newly appointed surveyors and students from technical universities.
- Administration: Finalizing building files and creating statistical reports for the department.
