The South African Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is responsible for managing the country’s prison system. With a staff of approximately 34,000, the department oversees 240 correctional facilities and ensures the safe custody and rehabilitation of inmates across South Africa.

Requirements
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.
- Successful completion of the Correctional Science Learnership, Basic Training, or Induction Training Course (ITC).
Experience Levels:
- CB1-1: No previous experience is required.
- CB1-2: 10 years of relevant experience at the CB1-1 level.
- CB1-3: 10 years of relevant experience at the CB1-2 level.
Key Responsibilities
Case Officers are responsible for the administrative and security functions related to inmate management. Primary duties include:
Sentence Planning and Management
- Update and manage inmate sentence plans based on recommendations from the Case Management Committee (CMC).
- Complete and process official documentation (G331 and G356 forms) and update computer records accurately.
- Refer written committee decisions to the appropriate offices for action.
Documentation and Reporting
- Compile and maintain detailed profile reports for inmates.
- Manage the profile register and ensure all digital and physical records are up to date.
- Handle filing, mail, and the protection of classified documents.
Verification and Quality Control
- Verify that inmate information is correct and calculations for detention periods and release dates are accurate.
- Ensure all necessary documents are attached to submissions sent to the Head of the Correctional Centre.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding correspondence between inmates and the committee.
Security and Supervision
- Maintain safe custody by searching venues and offenders.
- Supervise the movement of inmates to ensure they do not wander uncontrolled.
- Ensure that the number of inmates returned to units matches the number received.
- Monitor the use of equipment to prevent abuse or damage.
