Chief Artisan: Carpenter / Joiner

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is looking for a qualified professional to fill the role of Chief Artisan for Carpentry and Joinery. This position is based in the Western Cape and focuses on maintaining high standards in artisan training and assessment.

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, applicants must have:

  • A National Training Certificate (NTC 3) in Engineering or a related qualification.
  • A Trade Test Certificate in Carpentry (including Joiner or Shopfitter specializations).
  • A formal Assessor Certificate.
  • At least three years of experience in artisan training or assessment.
  • A solid understanding of the Skills Development Act of 1998.
  • The ability to conduct trade tests in Carpentry and related trades.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Conducting trade tests for the Carpentry trade and managing the Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process.
  • Organizing and maintaining accurate assessment records.
  • Supervising Trade Assistants to ensure quality work.
  • Managing the procurement of equipment and materials needed for assessments.
  • Evaluating and monitoring the performance of staff within the unit.
