Chief Artisan Grade B: Physical Planning and Construction

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is seeking a qualified and experienced Chief Artisan to join our team in the Western Cape. This is a full-time position focused on overseeing physical planning, construction assessments, and artisan training.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: A National Diploma in Civil Engineering or a related qualification.
  • Certification: A valid Trade Test Certificate in Bricklaying or a related Civil Engineering trade. You must also hold Assessor and Moderator Certificates.
  • Experience: At least three years of supervisory experience, preferably within an artisan training, assessment, or technical instruction environment.
  • Knowledge:
    • Deep understanding of the Skills Development Act (1998) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations.
    • Ability to conduct and moderate trade tests and manage Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) processes.
    • Ability to interpret and implement the ARPL Toolkit and workshop safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Testing and Moderation: Conducting and moderating trade tests in bricklaying and construction. You will also manage the ARPL system and ensure all assessment records are kept safe and accurate.
  • Supervision: Leading and managing staff, including Chief Artisan A and Trade Assistants. This includes implementing performance management systems.
  • Management Support: Assisting the Deputy Director with administrative and management tasks as required.
  • Resource Management: Overseeing the procurement and control of tools, equipment, and materials needed for assessments and workshop activities.
