Role: Chief Investment Officer – Unlisted Investments

Location: Pretoria, Gauteng

Purpose of the Role

The Chief Investment Officer (CIO) provides strategic leadership for the unlisted investment portfolio. This role is responsible for defining and executing the organization’s private-markets strategy, including private equity, private credit, and other alternative asset classes. The CIO ensures that investments deliver long-term value, meet strategic goals, comply with governance standards, and achieve targeted returns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy & Leadership: Develop and lead a multi-year investment strategy for unlisted assets aligned with client mandates.
  • Portfolio Management: Oversee diversified portfolios across buyouts, venture capital, and credit. Manage capital allocation and liquidity planning.
  • Investment Selection: Direct rigorous due diligence and execution processes for new investment opportunities.
  • Value Creation: Drive operational and strategic initiatives to increase the value of portfolio companies.
  • Risk & Governance: Ensure all investments meet regulatory requirements and internal risk frameworks.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate investment performance and strategy to the board and external stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

  • At least 15 years of experience in investment management, specifically managing unlisted portfolios through various market cycles.
  • Minimum of 5 years in an executive or top management leadership role.
  • Master’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Investment Management, or a related field.
  • Professional designation: CFA, CA (SA), or Pr. Eng.
  • FAIS Registered Key Individual (RE 05, 01, and 03 Certificates).

Technical & Core Skills

  • Proven experience leading large investment teams in institutional environments.
  • Deep understanding of global markets, financial modeling, and risk analytics.
  • Strong expertise in asset allocation and valuation.
  • Excellent communication and board-level presentation skills.
  • High ethical standards and a strong focus on fiduciary duty.
  • Proactive thinking and the ability to adapt to changing market conditions.
