About the Internship

The City of Johannesburg is offering a student internship in the Community Development Department, Branch: Arts, Culture and Heritage. This programme is designed to give students hands‑on experience in heritage management, public art coordination and cultural resource administration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate stakeholder engagements for naming and re‑naming streets and public places.
  • Maintain the online heritage registers and record heritage buildings and sites.
  • Assist with the management of heritage sites and public art.
  • Provide administrative support to the Immovable Heritage Unit.
  • Help administer cultural programmes and events.
  • Document public artworks and heritage collections across the city.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding of immovable heritage and street naming processes.
  • Experience with public art portfolio management.
  • Exposure to heritage theory, legal frameworks and archival research.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric/Grade 12 Certificate.
  • National Diploma in Heritage Studies, Fine Art, Public Administration or a related field (NQF Level 6).
  • No prior experience required.
  • Only residents of the City of Johannesburg will be considered.

Competencies

  • Computer literacy – MS Office Suite.
  • Good verbal and written communication.
  • Basic GIS and mapping skills.
  • Documentation and project management.
  • Teamwork, integrity, attention to detail and customer service (Batho Pele).

Remuneration

R10 109,86 per month (basic salary, no benefits) for interns who have completed a minimum of 360 credits.
