About the Department

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA) is dedicated to promoting and supporting the agricultural sector to enhance economic, ecological, and social wealth. We serve commercial and smallholder farmers through research, veterinary care, and sustainable resource management.

Job Purpose

The Department is looking for a qualified individual to provide technical services and support in engineering research, design, manufacturing, operations, and maintenance.

Minimum Requirements

  • A 3-year National Diploma in Civil Engineering (or a relevant qualification).
  • Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineering Technician.
  • A minimum of 3 years post-qualification technical engineering experience.
  • A valid driver’s license (Code B or higher).

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Support: Assist engineers and technologists with field, workshop, and office activities.
  • Design & Safety: Evaluate technical manuals and drawings, incorporate new technology into designs, and ensure all work meets safety and regulatory standards.
  • Administration: Provide input for budgeting, maintain technical databases, and compile detailed progress reports.
  • Management: Supervise and control technical personnel and assets.
  • Research: Conduct literature studies on new engineering technologies to improve departmental expertise and stay updated with industry trends.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with stakeholders on engineering-related matters.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in Project Management, technical design analysis, and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAD) applications.
  • Compliance: Strong understanding of legal requirements and technical report writing.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Organization: Ability to work in a team, manage change, and plan effectively.
