Position Purpose
The Day Hoist Operator is responsible for managing helicopter hoist operations during daylight hours. This involves safely lowering and lifting marine pilots and cargo onto moving or pitching vessels at sea. You will work closely with the pilot to ensure the aircraft is positioned correctly while maintaining high safety standards in accordance with Civil Aviation Regulations and the National Ports Act.
Key Responsibilities
- Flight Operations: Safely manage the hoisting of marine pilots and cargo onto stationary or moving vessels. Help guide the aircraft position during offshore operations.
- Safety & Inspections: Perform pre-flight inspections of the helicopter and hoist equipment. Conduct safety briefings for all authorized passengers.
- Maintenance & Support: Test fuel samples, assist with daily compressor washes, and perform weekly maintenance on hoist cables. Help the engineering department when needed.
- Refueling: Operate fuel trucks and manage helicopter refueling.
- Emergency Services: Assist with Search and Rescue (SAR), casualty evacuations, and VIP flights. Provide basic cabin first aid if required during patient transfers.
- Data & Compliance: Collect data on hoist cycles and engine usage. Maintain accurate hoist logbooks and ensure all operations follow TNPA and maritime regulations.
Requirements
- Education: Grade 12 (Matric) with proficiency in English.
- Experience: At least 1 year of experience in general aviation.
- Skills: Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure while operating over moving vessels.
- Added Advantages: Previous experience with helicopter hoisting or knowledge of TNPA marine pilot services is highly beneficial.
