Deputy Director: Demography, Research and Statistics

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead the province’s efforts in demographic data collection and social research. Key duties include:

  • Data Management: Oversee the collection and processing of demographic data. Create frameworks to track population growth, age distribution, and migration trends.
  • Research Leadership: Direct research on social development issues. Use both qualitative and quantitative methods to predict future social trends.
  • Policy Support: Use statistical analysis to help develop and improve social development policies.
  • Reporting: Prepare and share statistical reports that help leaders make informed decisions.
  • Capacity Building: Train staff and partners on how to collect and use demographic data effectively.
  • Collaboration: Build strong working relationships with national bodies like Stats SA and academic institutions.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: An NQF level 6 qualification (or equivalent) in Demography, Statistics, Social Science, or Economics.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience, with at least 3 years at a Junior or Middle Management level.
  • Licensing: A valid driver’s license (except for persons with disabilities).

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent communication and customer focus.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Expertise in statistical methodologies and research design.
  • Familiarity with national data systems (e.g., Stats SA, GHS, Community Surveys).
  • Understanding of the Public Service Regulations and PFMA.
  • Proficiency in statistical software, data visualization, and GIS mapping.
  • Knowledge of social development indicators and poverty measurement tools.
