Job Purpose

The Deputy Director: Metrology and Standards will be responsible for overseeing technical infrastructure policies, managing stakeholder relationships, and ensuring that South Africa’s standards and metrology frameworks align with both local and international requirements.

Requirements

  • Education: A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 7) in Economics, Public Administration, Engineering, Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: 3 to 5 years of managerial experience specifically within a Technical Infrastructure environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Policy and Strategy Development

  • Develop and review technical infrastructure policies regarding accreditation, building regulations, and compulsory specifications.
  • Support the implementation of the Standards Act, Metrology Act, and Legal Metrology Act.
  • Guide technical entities such as the SABS and NMISA to ensure their activities align with the department’s strategic goals.
  • Contribute to Industrial Policy processes and Key Action Programmes.

2. Stakeholder Management

  • Act as a liaison between government departments, industry leaders, and technical agencies.
  • Represent the department in interdepartmental and international forums to address technical challenges.
  • Build strong professional relationships with provincial and municipal stakeholders, as well as organized business and labor groups.

3. Research and Analysis

  • Conduct detailed research on metrology and standards to recommend effective policy changes.
  • Analyze industrial competitiveness to create evidence-based interventions for the manufacturing sector.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Compare local policies against international best practices.
  • Conduct annual reviews to measure the impact of departmental interventions.
  • Prepare regular progress reports on technical infrastructure programs.

5. Sub-Directorate Management

  • Manage the sub-directorate’s internal administration, including budgets and business plans.
  • Compile monthly progress reports on project timelines and financial targets.
  • Provide input for divisional budget proposals and annual estimates.
