Job Opportunity: Electrical Controls Technician
The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in South Africa are looking for a skilled Electrical Controls Technician to join the team in Johannesburg. This is a full-time position responsible for maintaining and repairing electrical power systems across the Consulate’s facilities.
Role Overview
In this role, you will report to the Facilities Manager. You will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and optimization of electrical power control systems. This includes working on office buildings, residential properties, and underground infrastructure to ensure a safe and reliable power supply. This position requires being available for emergency calls 24/7.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance and Operations: Maintain generators, fire alarms, transformers, and switchgear. Perform regular preventive maintenance to prevent power outages.
- Troubleshooting: Use diagnostic tools and building automation systems to find and fix electrical issues.
- Project Support: Assist with technical reports, help prepare work plans for repairs, and monitor the work of outside contractors to ensure quality.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure all work meets safety standards and international building codes. Update technical records and maintain an inventory of tools and materials.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma (secondary school) and a completed vocational training program in electrical or mechanical systems. Specific training in Electrical Controls is required.
- Experience: At least 3 years of professional experience in maintaining commercial building electrical systems. You must have at least 2 years of experience working with large 3-phase electrical equipment (1600 Amps or higher).
- Language: Good proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Skills: Ability to read electrical drawings and schematics, proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and a valid driver’s license.
- Clearance: Must be able to obtain a security clearance and pass a medical exam.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Strong understanding of electrical theory and safety procedures (such as lockout/tag-out).
- Ability to use specialized tools and meters to diagnose complex electrical problems.
- Comfortable working in various environments, including tight spaces, heights, and outdoors.
- Excellent communication skills for working with team members and vendors.
