Job Opportunity: Fire Fighter – Ladysmith
Transnet is a central part of South Africa’s freight logistics chain, delivering essential goods across the country. We are currently seeking a dedicated Fire Fighter to join our team in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal. This role is vital for protecting lives, property, and the environment through emergency response and fire prevention.
Role Purpose
As a Fire Fighter, you will respond to fire and emergency situations, conduct fire prevention duties, and ensure all fire equipment is well-maintained and ready for use.
Key Responsibilities
- Emergency Response: Respond to fires, hazardous material (Hazmat) incidents, and other emergencies. Command incident sites until a higher authority arrives.
- Fire Prevention: Conduct fire patrols after hours and inspect dangerous goods in marshalling yards.
- Inspections: Inspect cargo sheds, warehouses, vessels, and grain elevators for fire hazards. Monitor “hot work” sites (welding/cutting) to ensure safety.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and test fire detection, suppression, and sprinkler systems. Ensure all fire-fighting tools are in top condition.
- Operations: Man the fire control room and assist with fire equipment on board tugs during vessel incidents.
- Compliance: Follow all safety legislations, Transnet policies, and ethical standards to protect assets and lives.
Requirements
- Education: Grade 12 (Matric).
- Certifications:
- Valid First Aid Level 3 or Basic Ambulance Assistant certification.
- Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 (SAQA/IFSAC accredited).
- Hazmat Awareness, Operational, and Technician certifications (SAQA/IFSAC accredited).
- Higher Certificate in Fire Technology (NQF 5).
- Experience: A minimum of four (4) years of experience in Hazmat, Fire, and Emergency Services.
- Driving: Valid C1 driver’s license with a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).
- Fitness: Must be mentally and physically fit for active duty.
