Job Opportunity: Flight Operations Inspector (Centurion)

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is an agency of the Department of Transport. Established to oversee and regulate civil aviation safety and security, the SACAA plays a vital role in ensuring the integrity of the aviation industry in South Africa. We are currently seeking a qualified Flight Operations Inspector to join our team in Centurion, Gauteng.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that airline operators maintain the highest safety and compliance standards. Primary duties include:

  • Site and Airline Inspections: Conduct routine inspections of station facilities, aprons, and en-route operations. Carry out regular oversight checks based on risk and performance assessments.
  • Safety Management: Assess the effectiveness of an operator’s Safety Management System (SMS) and ensure they have allocated sufficient resources to maintain safety.
  • Regulatory Oversight: Investigate and report on potential violations of aviation laws and operating regulations. Monitor operator documentation, staff, and governance frameworks.
  • Corrective Actions: Formally advise operators of any deficiencies and review their proposals for remedial action. Follow up to ensure all issues are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Reporting and Administration: Maintain accurate records of all inspections and investigations using the SACAA database and administrative systems.
  • Examiner Oversight: Supervise and approve designated examiners within operator organizations to ensure they meet required standards.
  • Standards and Promotion: Research and propose new operational standards for the industry. Represent the SACAA professionally and promote aviation safety through continuous improvement initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) plus a valid Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL – fixed wing) for Part 121 operations, or a Commercial Pilot License (CPL – fixed wing) for Part 135 operations.
  • Ideal Qualification: A Commercial Pilot License with a frozen ATPL is preferred.
  • Experience (Part 121): At least 1,500 hours as a pilot or pilot-in-command of a civil or military air transport aircraft.
  • Experience (Part 135): At least 1,000 hours as a pilot or pilot-in-command of a civil or military air transport aircraft.
