Job Opportunity: General Worker (Sports Ground)
The University of the Free State (UFS) is one of South Africa’s oldest and most respected institutions of higher education. Since opening in 1904, it has grown into a major university with over 34,000 students across three campuses. We are currently looking for a dedicated General Worker to help maintain our sports grounds and athletic facilities.
Role Overview
This is a full-time position located in the Free State. The successful candidate will be responsible for the upkeep, cleaning, and general maintenance of the university’s sporting areas to ensure they remain in top condition for students and staff.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Grounds Maintenance: Mow, rake, and trim lawns and athletic fields. This includes trimming trees and marking sporting areas as needed.
- Equipment Operation: Safely use hand and power tools such as brush cutters, mowers, blowers, and precision cutters.
- Cleaning: Clean assigned areas, pick up litter, and dispose of waste properly.
- Inventory Management: Keep track of cleaning supplies and request new materials when necessary.
- Irrigation and Care: Maintain irrigation systems and apply fertilizers or pesticides according to official safety instructions.
- Logistics: Drive vehicles or tractors to move equipment and materials. Assist with lifting and moving heavy objects when required.
- Safety and Compliance: Follow all safety procedures to promote a secure working environment. Inspect equipment regularly to ensure it is well-maintained.
- Teamwork: Attend scheduled meetings with the team leader and assist with other maintenance tasks as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Education: A minimum of Grade 10 (NQF Level 2). You must provide proof of this qualification.
- Driver’s License: A valid Code EB/B driver’s license is required.
- Experience: Previous experience related to the duties mentioned above.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one year of experience in a similar grounds-keeping or maintenance role.
- Proven experience in operating gardening machinery and tools.
- Knowledge of standard safety procedures for manual labor and chemical application.
