HVAC Controls Technician (HVAC Mechanic)

The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria is looking for a skilled HVAC Controls Technician to join our team. This is a full-time position focused on maintaining and repairing critical heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems at the New Embassy Compound (NEC).

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the Building Engineer Supervisor, your duties will include:

  • Performing skilled maintenance and repairs on HVAC controls and electrical components.
  • Working on systems within office buildings, residential properties, and support facilities.
  • Maintaining both above-ground and below-ground infrastructure.
  • Ensuring critical mechanical systems and building automation technology operate efficiently.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Education: High school diploma (secondary school) is required.
  • Vocational Training: You must have completed a specialized vocational program in HVAC or mechanical systems from an accredited institute. Training must include HVAC controls and building automation systems.
  • Experience: At least three years of professional experience in installing, repairing, and maintaining commercial HVAC systems and digital building controls.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of electrical theory, thermodynamics, and HVAC design. Familiarity with International Building Codes and safety standards.
  • Practical Skills: Ability to read blueprints, wiring schematics, and technical manuals. Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic meters.
  • Communication: Good working knowledge of English (speaking, reading, and writing). Proficiency in an additional South African language is required.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Driver’s License: Must have a valid driver’s license held for at least five years.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust security clearance.
  • Must pass a background investigation and a pre-employment medical exam.
  • Must be able to start work within 12 weeks of receiving agency authorization.
