Key Responsibilities

Working under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the successful candidate will handle the following areas:

Student Discipline

  • Handle reported cases of student misconduct according to the University’s Disciplinary Code.
  • Negotiate and finalize plea agreements with students who admit guilt.
  • Manage the administrative process for formal disciplinary committee hearings.
  • Communicate disciplinary outcomes to relevant departments.
  • Ensure students facing action are referred to necessary support services.

Legal Advice and Litigation

  • Provide legal advice and draft formal legal opinions.
  • Review new legislation and regulations to determine their impact on the University.
  • Draft letters of demand and assist with debt collection.
  • Review tender documents to ensure they meet legal and policy standards.
  • Assist with University litigation, including drafting instructions for external attorneys and preparing court documents.
  • Attend court proceedings and update stakeholders on the status of legal matters.
  • Draft and review a wide range of contracts, including service agreements, MoUs, non-disclosure agreements, and employment contracts.

Labour Relations and Training

  • Draft disciplinary charges and provide advice on labour law and employee policies.
  • Assist with dispute resolution, restructuring, and retrenchment processes.
  • Support matters involving unions, including the review of recognition and collective agreements.
  • Oversee employment litigation at the CCMA and other forums.
  • Provide training to staff and students regarding University policies, disciplinary processes, and labour law.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • An LLB degree.
  • At least one year of experience in a law practice or a professional environment where you provided legal advice and managed legal risks.
  • Proven experience in drafting legal documents.
  • Experience with employment dispute resolution processes (such as disciplinary hearings or CCMA proceedings).
  • A valid driver’s license.
